Artist Introduction

Liu Liyong is a landscape painter of the China Artists Association whose monumental ink paintings of misty rivers, verdant mountains and the karst peaks of Guilin have won China’s highest landscape-painting honours. His works combine traditional brush discipline with a modern sense of atmosphere and light. Artist Introduction Liu Liyong (刘立勇), courtesy name Shihong, was born in 1970 in Julu, Hebei Province, and now lives in Beijing. He is a member of the China Artists Association and of its Heshan Painting Society, a member of the Chinese Collectors Association, a specially appointed professor of the Art College of Hebei Agricultural University, Vice-President of the Beijing Dafeng Painting and Calligraphy Academy, and a tutor of the advanced Chinese painting class at Yunnan University. His painting “Spring Dawn in the Great Mountains” won the gold medal at the 2nd China Landscape Painting Art Biennale in 2008, one of the highest honours in the field. His landscapes — from “Love of the South Sea” and “A Cottage by the River” to “Auspicious Purple Haze over Guilin” and “Listening to Rain by the Little Tower” — display a rich command of ink, cloud and atmosphere, ranging from intimate 68cm sketches to monumental two-metre compositions.
