About the Artist

Fan Di’an is one of the most influential figures in the Chinese and international art world — President of the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), former Director of the National Art Museum of China, and Vice-Chairman of the China Artists Association. As a critic, curator and institutional leader, he has shaped the direction of contemporary Chinese art for three decades.

Artist Introduction

Fan Di’an (范迪安) was born in September 1955 and began his career in 1973. A professor with a graduate degree, he has dedicated his life to art criticism, exhibition curating and museum studies. He served as Director and Deputy Party Secretary of the National Art Museum of China, Vice-Chairman of the China Artists Association for its 7th and 8th terms, and is currently President and Deputy Party Secretary of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Vice-Chairman of the China Federation of Literary and Art Critics, Chairman of the Beijing Artists Association, and a member of the 13th National Committee of the CPPCC. He has curated and organised numerous landmark exhibitions of contemporary Chinese art, written over a million characters of art criticism and research, and edited major publications including “World Art History”, “Chinese Contemporary Art: 1979–2010” and the “World Higher Art Education Series”. He curated the Chinese national pavilion at the Venice Biennale and led curatorial projects for the Sino-French and Sino-Italian cultural years and the Shanghai Biennale, gaining wide international attention. As President of CAFA, he has deepened institutional reform, hosted the 34th World Congress of Art History, and built the academy into a globally engaged centre of art education and research.
