Chao Gu (晁谷)
Chao Gu – Chinese Painter
About the Artist
Chao Gu is a Beijing artist whose flower-and-bird paintings — squirrels among grain ears, herons among lotuses — are celebrated for their freshness, vitality and quiet Zen-like serenity. A member of the China Artists Association and one of the acknowledged masters of contemporary freehand painting, he sees in nature’s cycles a profound meditation on life itself.
Artist Introduction

Chao Gu (晁谷), originally named Zhang Jinghua, was born in Beijing in 1962. A member of the China Artists Association, Vice-President of the Beijing Cross-Strait Calligraphers and Painters Friendship Association, and one of China’s most accomplished young realist painters, he has won wide acclaim for his distinctive artistic language. His art extends beyond painting into calligraphy and seal carving: his calligraphy is forceful and vital, his seal carving skilful and well composed — testaments to a complete classical training. In flower-and-bird painting he has probed deeply: grain ears with squirrels, birds and lotuses — all rendered with a clarity, naturalness and airy tranquillity that is at once archaic and unmistakably contemporary. He treats art as life itself; in his eyes, autumn is not decay but renewal, the starting point of the cycle of seasons. As in the pumpkins he paints — withering at harvest while their seeds carry the promise of next spring — his work expresses the endless rhythm of life, “one cycle after another, generation after generation”. His paintings include “Red Autumn in Jimo”, “The Ancient Bronze in Moonlight”, “What the Long-Lived Delight In” and “A New Branch Greets the Autumn Dew”, and have been exhibited and collected both at home and abroad. He is also active in cultural exchange and public welfare, contributing to the dialogue between Chinese and international art.
