About the Artist

He Xiaolong paints the loess highlands of northwest China — its villages, persimmon trees and vast skies — in a bold, earthy idiom that has made him one of the distinctive landscape voices of his generation. A member of the China Artists Association and National First-Class Artist, he turns the soil of his homeland into monumental, deeply felt art.

Artist Introduction

He Xiaolong (贺小龙) was born in 1968 in Zhenyuan, Gansu Province, on the loess plateau. He is a member of the China Artists Association, a council member of the 6th Gansu Provincial Artists Association, Vice-Chairman of the Beijing Chinese Painting Artists Association, Deputy Director of the Dunhuang Creation Centre of the China Artists Association, and a National First-Class Artist. He graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Northwest Normal University, studied at the painter training class of the China Painting Research Institute, and later joined the Jiang Baolin Studio of the first advanced class of the China National Academy of Painting, and the Beijing Academy of Chinese Painting. His paintings capture the character of the highlands — the red persimmons of autumn, the deep gullies, the seasonal rituals of village life. Works such as “When the Persimmons Turn Red”, “Autumn on the Yuan Highlands”, “High Sky and Thick Earth” and “Home in Spring and Autumn” express both the harshness and the grandeur of the plateau with a language that is at once realistic and lyrical. His compositions are monumental and his brushwork vigorous, carrying the memory and soul of the northwest. He has exhibited widely and his works are collected by art institutions and private collectors.
