About the Artist

Wang Kuohai is the creator of the celebrated “New Han Painting” (Xin Han Hua) — a revolutionary style that transforms the imagery of Han-dynasty stone reliefs into living ink painting. A council member of the China Artists Association and former Chairman of the Central State Organs Artists Association, he is one of the most distinctive innovators in contemporary Chinese art.

Artist Introduction

Wang Kuohai (王阔海), originally named Wang Kehai, was born in 1952 in Zhaoyuan, Shandong Province. He joined the army in 1970 and graduated from the Chinese painting department of the People’s Liberation Army Academy of Art in 1989. He is a council member of the China Artists Association, Chairman of the Central State Organs Artists Association, a council member of the Chinese Painting Society, a standing council member of the China Fine Brushwork Painting Society, and a National First-Class Artist. For decades he has devoted himself to the study of Chinese painting aesthetics and traditional brush techniques, championing a comprehensive inheritance of the tradition while venerating the majestic, heroic spirit of the Han dynasty. He absorbed the essence of Han bricks, Han tiles and Han pictorial stone carvings, and drew upon folk arts such as relief sculpture, mural painting, Tang tricolour ceramics, paper-cutting and shadow puppetry. He transformed the carved forms of ancient Han stone reliefs into the brush-and-ink forms of a new painting language — turning carving into brushwork, replacing the chisel with the brush — and synthesised them into a modern ink idiom that the art world has hailed as “Wang Kuohai’s New Han Painting”. His works are archaic and elegant, unrestrained yet refined, free yet powerful, forming a wholly individual artistic signature. His representative works have been exhibited nationally and collected by leading institutions.
