Artist Introduction

Wu Jingyan (吴景砚), also known as Jingyan with the art name Yushi, was born in 1962 in Gu’an County, Hebei Province. He graduated from the Beijing Academy of Painting, where he studied under the celebrated contemporary master Wang Peidong, and also benefited from the personal guidance of Wang Mingming, Yang Yanwen, Guo Shifu and Li Xiaoke. He is a member of the Hebei Provincial Artists Association, a painter of the Wang Peidong Studio of the Beijing Academy of Painting, a member of the China Folk Artists Association, a specially invited painter of the Beijing CPPCC Academy of Painting and Calligraphy, and a National First-Class Artist. Fascinated by painting and calligraphy from childhood, he devoted himself to the study of colour and light in Chinese freehand painting, finding his subjects in the life around him. He excels in freehand flower-and-bird painting with a style that is weighty, bold and spirited — rooted in tradition yet pursuing the modernity and zeitgeist of the genre. His plum blossom paintings are especially celebrated: compositions are sparse and open, the brushwork free and spontaneous, fresh and rich without vulgarity, conveying a Chan-like serenity of “counting flowers idly beneath the woods by the water”. His works have been awarded in numerous national exhibitions and collected by statesmen and collectors in the United States, Britain, France, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. In recent years he has also devoted himself to ceramic carving, founding the Yiyuantang zisha cultural centre in Yixing, the pottery capital of China.
