Artist Introduction

Jin Yunchang is both a distinguished calligrapher and one of China’s foremost connoisseurs of classical painting and calligraphy. A research fellow at the Palace Museum and council member of the China Calligraphers Association, he brings rare scholarly depth and an authoritative eye to every brushstroke — calligraphy of the highest classical pedigree. Artist Introduction Jin Yunchang (金运昌), of Mongolian ethnicity, was born in Beijing in 1957. He is a council member of the China Calligraphers Association and a member of its Appraisal and Evaluation Committee, a research fellow of the Palace Museum’s Department of Ancient Calligraphy and Painting, Vice-President of the Chinese Calligraphy Research Institute, and a member of expert appraisal committees of the Ministry of Culture. He graduated from Capital Normal University in 1982 and taught classical Chinese there, studying calligraphy under Ouyang Zhongshi and Kang Yin while helping found the university’s calligraphy education programme — the first doctoral programme in calligraphy in China. In 1997 he joined the Palace Museum, where years of daily guardianship of the national collection of paintings, calligraphy and rubbings honed his connoisseurship to a rare level. He began with Tang regular script and Northern Wei steles, later absorbing the running-cursive traditions of the Two Wangs and Li Yong; under the guidance of Liu Bingsen he blended a dig.
