Lu Zhongnan – Chinese Calligrapher

About the Artist

Lu Zhongnan is a celebrated master of kaishu, or regular script — the most disciplined and classical of all Chinese calligraphy styles. A military calligrapher trained under the tutelage of Qi Gong and Ouyang Zhongshi, he is renowned for his mastery of the Ouyang Xun tradition, combining rigorous brushwork with quiet elegance. His works are collected by top national institutions and prized by connoisseurs worldwide.

Artist Introduction

Lu Zhongnan (卢中南) was born in Wuhan in December 1950, with ancestral roots in Jiyuan, Henan. A distinguished calligrapher and recipient of the Special Government Allowance of the State Council, he serves as a council member of the China Calligraphers Association, vice-chairman of its Hard-Pen Calligraphy Committee and a member of its Regular Script Committee, and was a member of the 10th and 11th National Committee of the CPPCC. He worked for decades at the Military Museum of the Chinese People’s Revolution. Dedicated exclusively to regular script, Lu studied the stele models of Ouyang Xun for many years and received guidance from Qi Gong, Ouyang Zhongshi and Li Duo. In 1986 he won first prize in the national television calligraphy competition jointly held by the China Calligraphers Association and CCTV. While rooted in the Ouyang tradition, he draws upon Yan Zhenqing, Zhao Mengfu, Wei steles and Jin-Tang small regular script, evolving a style that is at once refined and vigorous. He has published nearly a hundred copybooks and textbooks, including “Three Hundred Tang Poems in Small Regular Script”. His works are held by the Memorial Hall of Chairman Mao, Zhongnanhai, the National Art Museum of China and the Guangdong Museum of Art, among other institutions.
