Wei Siqin – Chinese Calligrapher
About the Artist
Wei Siqin is one of China’s most admired female calligraphers — a National First-Class Artist, council member of the China Calligraphers Association and Vice-Chairman of the Anhui Provincial Calligraphers Association. Her writing is lyrical, elegant and full of quiet charm, earning her recognition as an outstanding representative of contemporary women’s calligraphy.
Artist Introduction
Wei Siqin (韦斯琴) is a council member of the China Calligraphers Association, a National First-Class Artist, Vice-Chairman of the Anhui Provincial Calligraphers Association, a member of the Chinese Prose Society, and a professional artist of the Wuhu Municipal Academy of Painting and Calligraphy. She was appointed a member of the Anhui Provincial Research Institute of Culture and History in 2007. In 2008 she served as the principal calligrapher for “Ode to Virtue”, a work by the ninety-year-old founder of the Foundation for the Revitalisation of Chinese Education Science, which was included in the national continuing-education curriculum for school teachers. Wei Siqin’s calligraphy is filled with an air of serenity and refined feeling that flows naturally from the brush. Her works bear comparison with the finest writings of gifted women calligraphers of the Ming dynasty, and she is widely hailed as an outstanding representative of contemporary female calligraphy. Appreciating her calligraphy is like reading her essays — imaginative and visual at once, quietly unfolding like the title of her prose collection, “Let Me Approach You Slowly”. She excels across scripts with a graceful, elegant hand, and her works have been exhibited and collected nationally. Her dual career as calligrapher and essayist gives her art a rare literary depth that resonates with collectors of refined taste.
