About the Artist

Zhang Weidong is a council member of the China Calligraphers Association and Vice-Chairman of the Shanghai Calligraphers Association. A student of the celebrated master Liu Xiaoqing, he has been selected for more than forty national exhibitions and has won honours from the Lanting Award to the National Stars Award, making him one of the most honoured active calligraphers of his generation.

Artist Introduction

Zhang Weidong (张卫东) is a council member of the China Calligraphers Association, a member of its Running Script Committee for the 6th, 7th and 8th terms, and Vice-Chairman of the Shanghai Calligraphers Association. He began studying calligraphy in 1977 and became a student of the renowned master Liu Xiaoqing in 1988. His works have been selected for the 6th, 7th, 8th, 10th, 11th and 12th National Calligraphy and Seal Carving Exhibitions (as a specially invited artist for the 12th), the 2nd, 5th and 6th Lanting Awards, and more than forty major national shows including youth, couplet, regular-script, fan and album exhibitions. His honours include: the Excellence Prize at the 1st National Running-Cursive Exhibition (1995), second prize at the 8th National Youth Exhibition (2000), third prize at the National Lady Xian Calligraphy Exhibition (2005), second prize at the 1st National Album Exhibition (2008), and the Gold Award for calligraphy at the 14th National Stars Award of the Ministry of Culture (2007). He was a delegate to the 11th National Congress of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and to the 7th, 8th and 9th national congresses of the China Calligraphers Association. The late former CCA Chairman Shen Peng praised his art with the inscription “Drawing from the Ancient, Seeking the New” — an apt summary of his calligraphy, which is rooted in tradition yet fresh and personal.
