Nie Yuanxin – Chinese Seal Carver

About the Artist

Nie Yuanxin is a master seal carver whose journey from stone-cutter to nationally recognised artist embodies the Chinese ideal of “perseverance polishes stone, and stone polishes the man”. A Tujia artist skilled in carving jadeite, agate and crystal, he has cut more than ten thousand seals and published nearly ten volumes of seal impressions.

Artist Introduction

Nie Yuanxin (聂元鑫), of the Tujia ethnic group and known as “the mountain man of Tujia”, was born in March 1956 into a stone-cutter’s family in Sangzhi County, Hunan. From the age of twelve he learned to carve characters on stone tablets and gravestones, a craft he pursued for twenty-five years. In 1993 a chance meeting with the scholar Professor Huang Aixiang led him to transform his stonemason’s skills into the systematic study of ancient scripts — bronze inscriptions, small seal script and oracle bones. He studied with the distinguished seal masters Chen Chusheng, Li Gangtian, Ouyang Guangyong, Cao Baolin and Han Tianheng, attending training classes and advanced seminars of the China Calligraphers Association over four consecutive years and furthering his studies at the Xiling Seal Art Society. He is a member of the Hunan Provincial Calligraphers Association and Artists Association, and the leading seal carver of the China Inscription Network and Badouyuan. He excels in carving precious hard materials — jadeite, agate and crystal — with seal texts drawn from the classical pictographic tradition, and has cut more than ten thousand seals for collectors and institutions. His works have entered national and provincial exhibitions dozens of times, and he was invited for international academic exchange in Malaysia. His masterworks include the Guangdong green-stone sets “Eight Scenes of Yangcheng” and “Names of Guangzhou’s Historical Prefectures”. In 2022 he donated a seal commemorating the 126th anniversary of Marshal He Long’s birth to the He Long Memorial Hall.
