Dong Shujin – Chinese Calligrapher

About the Artist

Dong Shujin is a Beijing calligrapher trained at the Tsinghua University Academy of Arts & Design, whose work bridges classical tradition and modern aesthetics. A graduate of the university’s advanced programme in Chinese calligraphy, he combines disciplined study of the ancients with a contemporary sensibility, earning him recognition as a “Millennium Calligrapher” of the United Nations.

Artist Introduction

Dong Shujin (董树进), courtesy name Moyan, was born in Beijing in May 1960. He graduated from the advanced class in Chinese calligraphy art at the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University. He is a member of the Beijing Calligraphers Association, a member of the Chinese Couplet Society and of its Calligraphy Art Committee, Vice-President of the ASEAN International Academy of Painting and Calligraphy, an academician of the United Nations Millennium Academy of Painting and Calligraphy and of the Chinese Academy of Painting and Calligraphy, and a visiting professor of the Damo Zen Painting Academy of Shaolin Temple. His guiding principle is “rooted in tradition, reverent but never enslaved to the ancients”. His calligraphy has been exhibited and honoured at the National Museum of China, the China Millennium Monument, the National Art Museum of China and the Great Hall of the People, earning him the honorary title of “UN Millennium Calligraphy Master”. His works have been selected for “The Collection of Famous Chinese Calligraphers” and he has published “Collected Calligraphy of Dong Shujin”. Combining deep study of classical masters with modern aesthetic concepts, his style preserves the flavour of traditional calligraphy while carrying the vitality of contemporary art. He is also active in public welfare, using art to spread positive energy, and his works are collected by art institutions and collectors at home and abroad.
