About the Artist

Guo Yongyan is a contemporary master who excels in calligraphy, large freehand flower-and-bird painting and poetry. A council member of the China Calligraphers Association, Chairman of the China Financial Calligraphers Association and Vice-Dean of the Li Keran Academy of Painting, he studied under the great Li Kuchan tradition — his art praised by Qi Gong as “every character refined, every stroke interlocked”.

Artist Introduction

Guo Yongyan (郭永琰) is a celebrated contemporary calligrapher, large freehand (xieyi) flower-and-bird painter and poet. He serves as a member of the 9th and 10th China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, a council member of the China Calligraphers Association, Chairman of the China Financial Calligraphers Association (3rd and 4th terms), and Vice-Dean of the Li Keran Academy of Painting, concurrently heading its Calligraphy and Seal Carving Academy. In his youth he studied large freehand flower-and-bird painting under Deng Xiliang, a direct student of the great master Li Kuchan, and calligraphy under the renowned calligrapher Kang Yong. His works have been shown in national exhibitions, and he has served as chief juror of the national financial calligraphy exhibitions. He has published more than thirty books, including “Selected Calligraphy of Guo Yongyan in Regular Script” series and “Selected Classical Poems Appreciated Through Painting and Calligraphy”. Qi Gong praised his calligraphy as “character by character refined, stroke by stroke interlocked”; Liu Bingsen wrote that it is “archaic and elegant, surpassing the worldly — exactly like the man himself”. His solo exhibition was held at the Great Hall of the People in 2015, and he has taught on the national TV channel’s “One Character a Day” programme. In 2001 he was named a “Calligrapher of Both Virtue and Art” by the China Calligraphers Association.
