About the Artist

He Changgui is a council member of the China Calligraphers Association and a leading calligrapher of Heilongjiang Province, admired for his vigorous, free-spirited writing in clerical, seal and running-cursive scripts. His work combines forceful brush energy with an open, contemporary spirit — bold, expansive and distinctly modern.

Artist Introduction

He Changgui (何昌贵), courtesy name Boyuan, was born in Jixian County, Heilongjiang Province, in February 1954. He is a council member of the China Calligraphers Association, President and Editor-in-Chief of China Youth Calligraphy Newspaper, Vice-Chairman of the Heilongjiang Provincial Calligraphers Association, and Vice-Chairman of the Jiamusi Municipal Calligraphers Association. He is accomplished in clerical script, seal script and running-cursive script, and pursues a style of clarity, strength and unrestrained boldness. His creative approach refuses any single formula: he freely adapts his method to the demands of each work, delights in seal carving, and pays close attention to the spirit of the times in his writing. He Changgui’s calligraphy has been widely exhibited and appreciated; his exhibition works demonstrate a mature artistic language in which classical brush discipline and contemporary expression meet. A lover of seal carving as well as calligraphy, he seeks vitality and personal character in every line, and his works are admired for their forceful brushwork, dignified expansiveness and lofty, broad-minded spirit.
