Jia Pingwa (贾平凹)
Jia Pingwa – Chinese Calligrapher
About the Artist
Jia Pingwa is one of China’s most celebrated living writers — a former Vice-Chairman of the Chinese Writers Association whose literary fame is matched by his distinctive calligraphy. His writing, praised for its bold, rustic and deeply personal character, has made him one of the most sought-after names in contemporary Chinese culture.
Artist Introduction

Jia Pingwa (贾平凹), originally named Jia Pingwa (a homophone chosen for simplicity), was born on 21 February 1952 in Danfeng County, Shaanxi Province. After graduating in Chinese literature from Northwest University in 1975, he worked as a literary editor before devoting himself to creative writing from 1982. He served as Vice-Chairman of the Chinese Writers Association and Chairman of the Shaanxi Provincial Writers Association. His novels and essays — celebrated for their vivid portrayal of rural northwestern China and its transformation since the reform era — have earned him a place among the most important voices in contemporary Chinese literature. His works are rich in regional character, fresh in style and profound in their reflection of modern Chinese society, and he is widely known abroad as the “Lone Ranger” of mainland Chinese letters. Jia Pingwa’s calligraphy carries the same distinctive temperament as his prose: unadorned, powerful and full of personality. It is not the calligraphy of a professional brush artist, but the natural expression of a literary master’s hand — which is precisely why his inscriptions are so eagerly sought after by collectors, cultural institutions and businesses for plaques, signboards and gifts.
