About the Artist

Li Gangtian is a titan of contemporary Chinese seal carving and calligraphy — Vice-President of the Xiling Seal Art Society, winner of the 5th China Calligraphy Lanting Award (Art Prize), and a former editor-in-chief of “Chinese Calligraphy” magazine. His art unites seal script, clerical script, regular script and seal carving in one scholarly whole of rare authority.

Artist Introduction

Li Gangtian (李刚田) was born in March 1946. He is Vice-President of the Xiling Seal Art Society, Professor and Doctoral Supervisor of the Calligraphy College of Zhengzhou University, and President of the Wang Xizhi Art Research Institute in Lanting, Zhejiang. He won the Art Prize at the 5th China Calligraphy Lanting Award, among numerous other honours, and served as editor-in-chief of “Chinese Calligraphy” magazine and as a council member of the China Calligraphers Association for thirty consecutive years. He has repeatedly been appointed a juror of major national calligraphy and seal carving events, and has published more than forty professional books. As both artist and theorist, Li’s seal carving is distinguished by rigorous, refined seal-script selection and vigorous, chiselled knife work — balanced compositions that conceal the extraordinary within the ordinary, fusing fine craftsmanship with rustic simplicity. His calligraphy spans seal, clerical, regular and running scripts, from monumental couplets to intimate fan faces, always informed by deep epigraphic learning. Works such as his seal-script rendering of Xin Qiji’s “Nanjingzi” and his calligraphy of the “Lanting Preface” demonstrate his command of the classical canon. His scholarly essays are celebrated for their economy and insight. As a member of China’s leading generation of seal artists, he occupies a position of central importance in the contemporary art world.
