About the Artist

Nie Chengwen is a master of cursive and running script whose works stand out for their precise brushwork, rounded flowing lines and lofty archaic spirit. A former Vice-Chairman of the China Calligraphers Association and current Honorary Chairman of the Liaoning Provincial Calligraphers Association, he represents the bold, expressive tradition of Chinese grass script at its finest.

Artist Introduction

Nie Chengwen (聂成文) was born in Liaoyang, Liaoning Province, in February 1946. He currently serves as Advisor to the China Calligraphers Association and Honorary Chairman of the Liaoning Provincial Calligraphers Association, and holds the title of National First-Class Artist. He served as Vice-Chairman of the China Calligraphers Association for its 4th, 5th and 6th terms and as Director of its Cursive Script Committee, and acted as a juror — often as chief juror — for major national calligraphy exhibitions, including the National Youth Calligraphy Exhibition. He was also Vice-Chairman of the Liaoning Provincial Federation of Literary and Art Circles and Chairman of the Liaoning Provincial Calligraphers Association for its 2nd, 3rd and 4th terms. Nie is especially accomplished in cursive script. His works have been shown in exhibitions at home and abroad, and his publications include “Collected Calligraphy of Nie Chengwen” and “Collected Poetry and Essays of Nie Chengwen”. In his earlier years he wrote mainly in running-cursive style; his brushwork is rigorous and refined, his lines rounded and flowing, his character structures stable, his ink rich and lustrous, and his overall manner lofty and ancient — a distinct voice that has made him a prominent figure among his generation of calligraphers.
