About the Artist

Wu Qianqi is a versatile calligrapher of rare range — a winner of the Lanting Award, the highest honour in Chinese calligraphy, as well as a theorist and educator with more than twenty years of teaching experience. His art unites rigorous scholarship, assured technique and a deep commitment to transmitting the classical tradition.

Artist Introduction

Wu Qianqi (吴前琪) was born in 1962. He is a member of the China Calligraphers Association, Vice-Chairman of the Ma’anshan Municipal Calligraphers Association, Vice-Dean of the Kaiming Academy of Painting, and a guest professor at Chongqing Normal University and Hebei Academy of Fine Arts. He is a winner of the China Calligraphy Lanting Award, the National Award, and the Shen Peng Calligraphy Art Fund Award. In his early years he studied under the Jiangnan master Liu Mocun, and later furthered his training at the training centre of the China Calligraphers Association, the first master’s programme of Renmin University of China, the doctoral calligraphy programme of the Communication University of China, and the first national training class for calligraphy critics. He has been selected or awarded in fourteen major exhibitions organised by the China Calligraphers Association, and has published scholarly papers including “On Grip and Brush Method” and “A Glimpse of the Jin-Dynasty Style”. He has taught calligraphy for over twenty years — from children’s and adult classes to advanced seminars, association training and university lectures — and dozens of his works are held by the National Museum of Chinese Writing, the Lanting Calligraphy Museum, the Tianjin Art Museum, the Du Fu Thatched Cottage Museum and other cultural institutions. He also writes poetry, essays and criticism, embodying the ideal of the calligrapher who excels in creation, theory and teaching alike.
