About the Artist

Xu Mingchun is a young master of calligraphy and seal carving — a member of the China Calligraphers Association who won the highest prize at the 10th National Calligraphy and Seal Carving Exhibition, China’s most important calligraphy competition. A member of the Shen Peng studio at the China National Academy of Painting, his work spans exquisite seals, expressive seal script and refined ink painting.

Artist Introduction

Xu Mingchun (徐明春), of the Dong ethnic group, was born in 1983 in Sanjiang, Guangxi, and now lives in Beijing. He studied at the China National Academy of Painting and is a member of the Shen Peng creation studio there; he also holds a graduate degree in fine arts from the School of Arts of Renmin University of China. He is a member of the China Calligraphers Association, a council member of the Guizhou Provincial Calligraphers Association and of its seal carving committee, Vice-President of the Fufeng Seal Society of Guizhou, a member of the Guizhou Provincial Artists Association, and a calligraphy and seal carving tutor of the Tsinghua University Chinese Painting advanced class. In 2011 he won the highest prize at the 10th National Calligraphy and Seal Carving Exhibition, the nation’s most prestigious calligraphy competition. He has been honoured as an “Artist of Both Virtue and Art” of Guizhou Province and named a “2018 Public Welfare Ambassador of Love” by the China Social Welfare Foundation. He has held solo exhibitions at the Prince Gong Mansion in Beijing, the Shenzhen University Art Museum, the Beijing Zhongshan Park Huifang Garden and Rongbaozhai (Guiyang), among other venues. His publications include the calligraphy and seal albums “Dan Mo Ming Chun”, “Looking Up to Shanyin” (Prince Gong Mansion) and “In the Deep Place of Ink and Cloud” (Lingnan Fine Arts Publishing House). His seals — carved in Laoshan stone, zisha and other materials — and his calligraphy of classical poetry are prized by collectors across China.
