About the Artist

Xu Yu is a towering figure of Chinese cultural life — poet, essayist and calligrapher who served as Vice-Chairman of the China Calligraphers Association and was awarded the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024. His calligraphy carries the refined soul of a scholar-poet, fusing literature and brushwork into one luminous art.

Artist Introduction

Xu Yu (旭宇), born Xu Yutang in Yutian County, Hebei Province, is a first-class writer and senior editor who enjoys the Special Government Allowance of the State Council. He served as Vice-Chairman of the China Calligraphers Association for its 4th and 5th terms and is now an Advisor to the association; he is also Vice-Chairman of the Chinese Prose Poetry Society, Honorary Chairman of the Hebei Provincial Federation of Literary and Art Circles, and Honorary Chairman of the Hebei Provincial Calligraphers Association, which he led for its 3rd, 4th and 5th terms. He serves as President of the China Academy of Regular Script Art and as a counsellor of the Hebei Provincial Government. In 2024 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, the highest honour of its kind. Xu Yu is a rare artist who unites poetry, prose and calligraphy. His calligraphy is shaped by his literary cultivation — quiet, scholarly and full of inner elegance — and his writings on calligraphy and art have influenced a generation. As one of the most respected elder statesmen of contemporary Chinese calligraphy, his works are prized for both their artistic quality and their cultural weight.
