Zhang Guozhong (张国忠)
Zhang Guozhong – Chinese Seal Carver
About the Artist
Zhang Guozhong is a Heilongjiang calligrapher whose running-cursive script — nurtured on the wild cursive of Zhang Xu, Huai Su and Huang Tingjian — is known for its weight, strength and untrammelled beauty. A member of the China Calligraphers Association, he writes with a full, vigorous brush that is both deeply traditional and refreshingly contemporary.
Artist Introduction
Zhang Guozhong (张国忠), pen name Qiwa, was born in 1972 in Zhaozhou County, Heilongjiang Province. He is a member of the China Calligraphers Association and of the Heilongjiang Provincial Calligraphers Association. He has been bound to calligraphy since childhood, and for decades has laboured quietly at the writing desk without cease. He is accomplished in many scripts, with outstanding excellence in running-cursive script: he has long studied the cursive traditions of Zhang Xu, Huai Su and Huang Tingjian, and has built the foundations of seal, clerical and regular script on the classic models “Stone Drums Inscription”, “Zhang Qian Stele”, “Ode to the Stone Gate” and “Zhang Menglong Stele”. This broad training has given him a distinctive personal style. His calligraphy is full and weighty, with a vigorous brush, free and handsome — flowing and exhilarating. It carries both a strong breath of tradition and a contemporary aesthetic that refreshes the viewer’s perception. His works have been exhibited and published in national and provincial venues, and he is admired by fellow calligraphers for his dedication and his ability to make the ancient art of cursive script feel alive and immediate. As an artist of the China Inscription Network, he also accepts commissions for framed works, plaques and inscriptions.
