Zhang Tongyan (张铜彦)
Zhang Tongyan – Chinese Calligrapher
About the Artist
Zhang Tongyan is a versatile calligrapher celebrated above all for clerical script (lishu), running-regular script and Northern Wei stele style. A former council member of the China Calligraphers Association, he combines classical discipline with a style of broad popular appeal — dignified, accessible and deeply rooted in the great traditions of Chinese writing.
Artist Introduction

Zhang Tongyan (张铜彦) was born in Gaoyang, Hebei Province, in October 1958. He served as a council member of the 5th and 6th China Calligraphers Association, as founding Chairman (1st and 2nd terms) of the China Financial Calligraphers Association, as a council member of the China Literary Volunteers Association and the Soong Ching Ling Foundation, and as a guest professor of the China Calligraphy and Painting TV Channel. He is proficient in many scripts and excels in clerical script, running-regular script and Northern Wei stele style. His works have been shown in major national exhibitions including the Lanting Calligraphy Biennale and international exchange exhibitions, and he has frequently served as juror at national competitions. His monumental clerical-script piece “Su Shi’s ‘Recalling the Past at Red Cliff'” is in the collection of the Great Hall of the People, and his works are held by the National Art Museum of China, the Central Archives, the National Museum of China and the Lanting Calligraphy Museum. Invited by the China Calligraphers Association, he wrote the core socialist values in clerical script for nationwide public posters. He lectures widely at leading universities and has presented teaching series on Yan Zhenqing’s masterpieces for the national calligraphy TV channel. In 2016 the channel held a solo exhibition, “In Praise of the Classics — Zhang Tongyan Calligraphy Exhibition”, in his honour.
