Artist Introduction

Zhou Shangyong (周尚勇), courtesy name Chongwen, art name Guofu, and also known as Master of the Yunyi Hall, was born in 1973 in Bishan, Chongqing, into a scholarly family. From childhood he combined a love of calligraphy with exceptional manual dexterity, practising “dancing with the knife and wielding the ink” from an early age. He has long been devoted to literati objets d’art and, in his spare time, to calligraphy and seal carving. He received instruction from Pan Qihui, a master of intangible cultural heritage micro-carving and a national-level arts and crafts master, and from Zhang Yinong, a master of the Xiling school of epigraphy. He then became a formal student of Liao Yi, a member of the Seal Carving Committee of the China Calligraphers Association and the Chongqing Calligraphers Association, under whose guidance his epigraphic skills advanced greatly. Rooted in tradition, he excels in the styles of the Qin and Han dynasties and in the steady, refined yuanzhuwen manner of Zhao Shuru and Wang Fu’an. He is a member of the Chongqing Bayu Seal Society and the Haiwu Painting and Calligraphy Academy. His works have been honoured and exhibited in major events including the 2nd Haihunhou Domestic and International Calligraphy Exhibition (excellence award), the Chongqing seal carving exhibition marking the centenary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, and the 13th Chongqing Calligraphy and Seal Carving Exhibition. His seals are distinguished by disciplined composition, precise knife work and the quiet elegance of the classical tradition.
