Zhu Fei – Chinese Calligrapher

About the Artist

Zhu Fei is a Shaoxing calligrapher and publisher whose elegant running-regular script carries the refined spirit of the Jin and Tang dynasties. Vice-Chairman of the Chinese Collectors Association’s calligraphy committee and founder of the Shaoxing Painting and Calligraphy Society, he represents the scholarly, cultured tradition of China’s historic water towns.

Artist Introduction

Zhu Fei (朱非) was born in June 1945 in Shaoxing, the historic city of Zhejiang famed as the birthplace of the great calligrapher Wang Xizhi. He serves as Vice-Chairman of the Calligraphy Collection Committee of the Chinese Collectors Association, Honorary President of the Shaoxing Moqu Society, and advisor to the Shaoxing Painting and Calligraphy Society, and is a leading calligrapher of the China Inscription Network. From childhood he practised calligraphy without cease: regular script from Ouyang Xun, running script from the Two Wangs and Zhao Mengfu, with occasional ventures into Han clerical and Northern Wei styles — his mastery centred on running-regular script. He delights in tradition, pursuing a style that is elegant, fluent, full of spirit and precise in every stroke. In 1986 he co-founded the Shaoxing calligraphy group Moqu Society; in 1989 he founded the Shaoxing Painting and Calligraphy Society; and in 1996 he invented a new technique for processing xuan paper, developing a series of raw-xuan products sold nationwide. His publications include the historical studies “A History of Doumen” and “The Mystery of Doumen”, and the calligraphy albums “Two Running-Script Works of Zhu Fei”, “Spring Night Banquet in the Peach and Plum Garden”, “Dreaming of Jin and Tang” and “Spring Mountain in Ink”. Zhu Fei seeks the spirit of antiquity in his writing, deliberately avoiding the fashions of his own day — a quiet scholar’s choice that gives his work a timeless, unhurried quality.
