Born in 1953 in Qixia, Shandong Province, Miao Zaixin holds a remarkable roster of positions: member of the National Themes Art Creation Committee of the China Artists Association, researcher at the China National Academy of Painting and the Chinese National Academy of Arts, and deputy director of the painting academy at Beijing Normal University’s Qigong Academy. He is a national first-class artist and has taught advanced classes at Peking University, Tsinghua, and Renmin University.

Miao is best known for paintings of modern Chinese history and national life. His works include Marx Writing the Communist Manifesto, the collaborative Huishi Jinggang (Joining Forces at Jinggang), Longzhong Dui (The Longzhong Strategy Meeting), Fugong Ri (Return to Work Day), Bai Tuan Da Zhan (The Hundred Regiments Offensive), and a suite on the Long March, together with the oil painting Red Apple. Many of these hang in the National Museum of China, the Museum of the Communist Party of China, the National Art Museum of China, the Military Museum of the Chinese People’s Revolution, the National Library, and the Great Hall of the People.

His most ambitious project is Min Zu Zhi Guang (Light of the Nation), a monumental set of 56 paintings depicting China’s ethnic groups. The series has drawn wide attention and high praise for its dignified, lifelike treatment of figures in their traditional dress and settings.

A Style Between Tradition and Reality

Miao works mainly in figure painting, rendered with fine, controlled brushwork, while his larger compositions show the freedom of xieyi (freehand) brushwork.
