Overseas Images of China on View at National Museum of China

On May 30, 2026, “Look & See: Images of China from Overseas Collections” (看·见——中国国家博物馆藏海外中国图像展) opened to the public in North Hall 8 of the National Museum of China (NMC) in Beijing. The exhibition is organized by the museum with support from the China Internet Information Center of the China International Communications Group.

Three Ways of Seeing China

Featuring some 300 items (sets) of “overseas images of China” acquired by the museum in recent years, the show uses images as a mirror and time as a thread. It unfolds in three sections:

• “Viewing from Afar” — the grand, romantic images of China imagined across the sea
• “Gazing” — field observation and careful scrutiny during the transformations of the modern era
• “Insight” — the vitality and spirit perceived in the new China

A History of Perception

The works range from export wares and illustrated Chinese classics that shaped the outside world’s early picture of China, to images recording exploration and resilience amid modern upheaval, to photographs capturing the energy of the People’s Republic’s early decades. Together they trace how foreigners’ perceptions of China evolved over centuries — and, seen in return, how China’s own path of renewal appears in foreign eyes.

The exhibition invites visitors to read “China” through multiple perspectives: the imagined, the observed, and the understood. In the museum’s telling, these images are not simply documents of China but mirrors of the people who made them — each era’s expectations, curiosities, and affections. Every image, the curators note, is a footnote to history, reflecting both the enduring roots of Chinese civilization and its long-held aspiration for peace and a better life.
