Shi Kai – Chinese Seal Carver

About the Artist

Shi Kai is one of the most influential seal carvers of contemporary China, renowned for a style of arresting ‘cold elegance’. A former Vice-Chairman of the Fujian Provincial Calligraphers Association and member of the Seal Carving Committee of the China Calligraphers Association, he turned professional in Beijing and has shaped the aesthetic of a generation of carvers.

Artist Introduction

Shi Kai was born in 1951 in Fuzhou, Fujian Province; originally surnamed Liu and also known as Jizhou, he adopted the surname Shi upon becoming a professional artist. In his youth he studied calligraphy, seal carving, painting and poetry under Chen Zifen, Xie Yigeng and He Dunren. In 1998 he moved to Beijing as a full-time seal carver and calligrapher, and is a member of the Canglang Calligraphy Society. He has served as Vice-Chairman of the Fujian Provincial Calligraphers Association, a member of the Seal Carving Committee of the China Calligraphers Association, a professor of the China Calligraphy Advanced Study Institute, a research fellow of the China Art Research Institute and the China Academy of Painting and Calligraphy, a research fellow of the Chinese Seal Carving Art Research Institute, and Vice-President of the Beijing Seal Society. He has lectured at the Beijing Fine Art Academy, the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Renmin University of China and the Rongbaozhai Academy, and was named an Artist of Annual Influence at the 7th AAC Art China awards, with numerous published albums. His seals are built on Han miao seal script fused with Qin measuring inscriptions and the bronze texts of the two Hans — broad, reserved structures and blunt, unadorned strokes that borrow the brush spirit of Six-Dynasty stone carvings, achieving his signature ‘cold elegance’: plain, simply profound, and quietly striking.
