Four Women Masters of Chinese Calligraphy to Know

Many observers say today’s calligraphy world is “strong in the feminine.” Certainly, a growing number of women calligraphers now match—or exceed—the technical mastery of their male peers. Four women directors of the China Calligraphers Association stand out as the “four golden flowers”: Zhang Hongchun, Lin Yumei, Wei Siqin and Fang Fang. All are steeped in classical brush technique, and each has a distinct voice.

Zhang Hongchun: Free Spirited Running Script

Zhang Hongchun is one of Shaanxi Province’s most celebrated calligraphers, serving as executive vice chair of the Shaanxi Calligraphers Association. She has long studied the masters of the “Two Wangs” (Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi) and Mi Fu. Her running-cursive script is decisive and spirited, blending the air of the Two Wangs, the brush intent of Mi Fu and the fullness of Su Shi—a lively elegance runs through every line, with layouts that feel open, cool and archaic.

Lin Yumei: Small Regular Script with Classical Charm

Lin Yumei hails from Fujian and is a prize-winning master of small regular script (xiao kai), a member of the CCA Women Calligraphers Committee, vice president of the China Zhi Gong Party Painting Academy and director of the Zhangzhou Art Museum. Her small regular script reaches back to antiquity, merging stele and copybook traditions; strokes borrow the flow of running script, while characters take a stable, square stance—fresh, natural and balanced between firmness and grace.

Wei Siqin: “Calligraphy Is My Faith”

One of the most collected women calligraphers in China, Wei Siqin once said: “Calligraphy is the faith of my life; I will hold to it forever.” In 1992 she entered the calligraphy program at Nanjing University of the Arts, spending three years copying classical models and absorbing the spirit of the Wei and Jin dynasties. Her Tang-dynasty regular script is dignified yet lively—at once strong and free, carrying a philosophical poise that captivates.

Fang Fang: Elegance in Every Stroke

In Beijing’s calligraphy circles, Fang Fang is admired both for her erudition and her art: she commands all five script styles and excels in running-cursive. Her brushwork is traditional and unhurried—steady yet spirited, with a clean, free start and finish. Her writing flows like water, clear and graceful, matching the poise of her presence. Fang currently serves as vice chair of the Beijing Calligraphers Association.
