Xiaoxiang Fenghua: 2025 Chinese Landscape Show Opens

On the morning of January 22, 2026, “Xiaoxiang Fenghua — 2025 Chinese Painting Exhibition (Landscape)” opened at the Nanyue Art Museum in Hunan Province. The show brings together 149 landscape paintings (*shanshui*) selected from more than 3,400 submissions from across China.

Organizers and Opening

The exhibition is hosted by the China Artists Association, the Hunan Provincial Federation of Literary and Art Circles, the CPC Nanyue District Committee, and the Nanyue District People’s Government, and organized by the Art Center of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, the Hunan Artists Association, the Nanyue District Publicity Department, and the Nanyue District Bureau of Culture, Tourism, Radio, Television and Sports.

District head Jiang Bingyan presided over the ceremony. Remarks were delivered by Wang Ping, secretary-general of the China Artists Association; Du Songru, deputy director of the Art Center; Le Yi, vice chairman of the Hunan Federation of Literary and Art Circles; and Xie Hong, vice mayor of Hengyang. Senior art officials and selected exhibiting artists attended.

A Platform for Landscape Art

Wang Ping said the works on view, rich in subject matter and diverse in form and viewpoint, capture the beauty of Xiaoxiang — the landscape of the Xiang River region — in tune with the spirit of the times. He pledged that the China Artists Association will keep building platforms for high-level artistic exchange and bringing quality cultural resources to communities and the public.

Du Songru noted that the brand has grown over five years from the “Nanyue Hengshan Biennale” into an important platform for cultural tourism and for discovering artistic talent. Le Yi described how the series binds high-level exhibitions to Nanyue’s natural scenery and cultural heritage, turning art into a “living business card” for local tourism. Xie Hong said the exhibition honors Hengyang’s local culture and supports the city’s culture-and-tourism strategy.

Selection and Highlights

Calling for entries began in September 2025. After initial and final review by expert panels, 149 works were chosen from more than 3,400 submissions. Ranging from the grand and imposing to the fresh and delicate, the paintings express artists’ love for the nation’s mountains and rivers, their praise of daily life, and their hopes for the future.

Mount Hengshan (Nanyue), one of China’s five sacred mountains, has drawn poets and painters for centuries. The exhibition continues that dialogue between art and a thousand-year-old landscape.
