Yan’an Hosts Advanced Chinese Painting Class for 30 Artists

From May 11 to 15, 2026, the first “Loess Ink Charm” advanced study class for young and mid-career Chinese painting talent was held in Yan’an, the revolutionary base city in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province. The class gathered 30 emerging artists and core students from new literary and art organizations, who completed five days of intensive training.

Master Teachers Across Three Genres

At the request of the Yan’an Federation of Literary and Art Circles, the China Artists Association sent three celebrated teachers to lead the program: Chen Yuming, deputy director of the association’s Chinese Painting Art Committee; Yao Mingjing, professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts; and Mo Xiaosong, former deputy director of the Beijing Academy of Painting. Each specializes in one of the great genres of Chinese ink painting — figure, landscape and bird-and-flower respectively.

Demonstration, Critique and Hands-On Sketching

The teachers delivered themed demonstrations in their genres and offered detailed critiques of every student’s work, with close guidance on composition, brushwork and the creation of artistic mood (yijing). Classroom exchanges were lively and the teaching atmosphere intense. During outdoor sketching sessions, students used their brushes to record Yan’an’s distinctive architecture and revolutionary heritage sites, drawing creative inspiration from the region’s storied red-soil landscape. The curriculum also included sessions on artistic values and social responsibility.

Nurturing Homegrown Talent

The class was designed to raise the level of Chinese painting in the Yan’an region and cultivate local artists. Participants said they would take the training as a new starting point, deepening their roots in tradition while innovating, and striving to create works with strength, warmth and cultural depth. Organizers see the program as a valuable experiment in fostering local artistic talent and a contribution to the high-quality development of literature and art in Yan’an.
