Yao Shaohua: The Grand Spirit of Tigers in Ink

Yao Shaohua was born in 1942 into an artistic family in Beijing, with ancestral roots in Dong’e, Shandong. He studied under Hu Shuang’an and He Haixia—both celebrated disciples of the great masters Zhang Daqian and Zhang Shanzi—inheriting the finest tradition of Chinese tiger painting.

Today Yao is executive vice chairman of the China Calligraphy and Painting Industry Alliance, a national first-class artist, an art appraisal committee member of the Ministry of Culture, and a guest professor and honorary doctor at the China Calligraphy and Painting Correspondence University and the International American University. He has been invited to the United Nations and traveled to more than twenty countries across Europe, America and Southeast Asia for cultural exchanges, receiving the UN “World Peace Academy International Art Authority Award” and the “World Celebrity Award.” His publications include *Yao Shaohua’s Tiger Painting Techniques* and textbooks on animal painting, and the China Charity Federation has honored his family as a “Charity Art Home.”

Yao’s tigers are built on anatomy and ink discipline, but what he captures is spirit: the poised crouch before the leap, the still authority of the king. His brush renders fur in layered ink-washes and dry strokes, eyes burning with quiet power.
