Dong Shujin: The Artistic Journey of a Beijing Calligrapher

In the wide sky of Chinese calligraphy, Dong Shujin writes with a spirit all his own. Known by the courtesy name Moyan, he was born in Beijing in May 1960 and is a graduate of the advanced calligraphy program at the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University. His creed is simple: tradition is the root — honor the ancients, but never serve them.

His affiliations trace the breadth of his practice: member of the Beijing Calligraphers Association; member of the China Couplet Society and of its calligraphy art committee; specially engaged calligrapher for Badou Art; vice president of the ASEAN International Academy of Calligraphy and Painting; academician of the United Nations Millennium Academy of Calligraphy and Painting and of the China Academy of Calligraphy and Painting; academician and deputy secretary-general of the Beijing Shenzhou Bogu Academy of Calligraphy and Painting; visiting professor at the Bodhidharma Zen Painting Academy of Shaolin Temple; member of the China Large-Character (Bangshu) Art Research Association; member of the Beijing China–Korea Calligraphers Friendship Association; and invited researcher at the Institute of Calligraphy and Painting Art of Modern Management University.

His work has been exhibited — and has won awards — at the National Museum of China, the China Millennium Monument, the National Art Museum of China, and the CPPCC Auditorium, and he holds the honorary title “United Nations Millennium Calligraphy Master.” He is listed in anthologies such as the *Collection of Famous Chinese Calligraphers* and has published the *Dong Shujin Calligraphy Collection*.

Early Roots

Art pulled at him early. Growing up in a family with an artistic atmosphere, he began systematic training in traditional technique and theory while still young, copying the old masters stroke by stroke — brush handling, ink control, composition, every detail studied with patience. That discipline became the bedrock of everything that followed.

Forming a Style

Experience loosened tradition’s grip. As his practice matured, Dong Shujin began joining a modern sense of beauty to classical technique, working out a personal style that keeps the flavor of the old masters while carrying the energy of contemporary art. He continues to experiment with new methods and materials, giving the work greater visual force without losing its interior calm.

Themes and Feeling

His subjects range widely — landscape, portraiture, abstract imagery — but the motive is constant: love of life, awe before nature, reflection on the human road. Each piece, in his telling, is feeling made visible, a state of mind poured into brush and ink, whether the subject is a grand river or a quiet portrait.

Influence and Giving Back

Collectors and institutions have taken his work, and he shows regularly at home and abroad. He is equally active in public-welfare projects, using art to pass on what is good, and his example has guided wave after wave of younger enthusiasts into the study of the brush.
