Zhang Hui: Monumental Bird-and-Flower Painting from Shaanxi
Zhang Hui: Monumental Bird-and-Flower Painting from Shaanxi
Zhang Hui was born in Pucheng, Shaanxi Province, and graduated from the Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts, with further study at the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, and the China National Academy of Painting. He is a member of the China Artists Association and the China Gongbi Painting Society, vice dean of the China National Academy of Ethnic Painting, chief painter of Badou Art, a council member of the Beijing Xicheng District Calligraphers Association and the Shaanxi Artists Association, vice dean of the Shaanxi Academy of Calligraphy and Painting, and a researcher at the Shaanxi Academy of Social Sciences’ institute of painting and calligraphy.

His field is bird-and-flower painting on a large, almost scenic scale — the Chinese sources call it “large real-scene” bird-and-flower painting. Frogs by a pond, sunflower gardens, banana groves, and misty wetlands are carried on sheets that run from intimate 45 cm leaves to scrolls five meters wide. His titles borrow from Zhuangzi and the Book of Songs as often as from country life, and the dates below, from 2006 to 2024, trace a career in continual motion.
